This flower pot was made by Hervey Brooks (1779–1873), a potter working in Goshen, CT, throughout the early to mid-19th century. His pottery business is extensively documented, and records indicate that Brooks fired his last kiln of wares in 1864 at the age of 85. The modest pot is proudly marked with his name stamp and is dated “1864,” making this one of the last pots that he produced. The redware produced by Brooks is representative of the last vestiges of local artisan production in New England before the industrial manufacture of ceramics domestically and abroad dominated the market.
