The Bonnet Shop of Boise, ID, was owned by stage and film actress Della Pringle in 1918. Della was the headliner of the “Jolly Della Pringle Company” which toured throughout the west but made its home in Boise. Della sold the shop in 1920 and returned to the stage with her then husband C.K. Van Auker. The two starred in a limited number of films in Hollywood and returned to Boise where Della lived out the rest of her life, leveraging her skills learned on the stage in her millinery work and costuming for Boise’s society set. Although widely integrated into western settings today, the pheasant is not in fact native to the Americas. The common ring-necked pheasant was exported from China to Idaho and other western states in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Thus, at the time of the hat’s manufacture, the prominent pheasant feathers extending upward from the toque would have referenced the fairly recent arrival of this now-common bird.
