This Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) quilt, which has squares from military units from Maine, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts, represents women’s organizing and philanthropic efforts after the Civil War on behalf of veterans. Created by the Lady Friends of the Veterans and the Women’s Relief Corps, this quilt shows the link between military activity and women’s involvement in Veteran care and philanthropy. The Woman’s Relief Corp, founded in 1883, was a national organization and eventually the official auxiliary to the Grand Army of the Republic, a fraternal organization for Veterans of the Union Army, Navy, and Marines. Through dues, fundraisers, benefit events, and donations, the Women’s Relief Corps raised money for veterans. This quilt is from the James H. Sargent Post #130 in Medway, MA, founded June 5, 1889. Using redwork embroidery, this quilt top was auctioned “for the benefit of the G.A.R. building.”. To assemble a quilt, members requested a donation for each square of the quilt, and the final product was assembled by the Women’s Relief Corps.
