An elegant mix of form and function, this combination ash-stand and smokers’ cabinet is a luxury item created by Chase Brass and Copper (Chase) from Waterbury, CT. A symbol of wealth, status, and luxury consumption, it is part of the longer legacy of manufacturing in Connecticut. Founded in 1876, Chase was one of the largest brass manufacturers in Waterbury, contributing to the city’s nickname “The Brass City.” Chase left Waterbury in 1975 and now operates in Montpelier, OH. This piece shows the craftsmanship and production of luxury goods made by American companies with innovative materials before the Second World War. It is also representative of the manufacturing might and ingenuity of Waterbury, CT, in the early 20th century.
