This two-part map depicting the colonies of North and South Carolina was printed in London in 1775. Considered to be the most accurate map of those colonies printed prior to the American Revolution, this detailed survey of the southern theater of operations served as an important resource for both the Continental and British armies. As suggested by the title, the map detailed largely unsettled inland areas where troop movements would follow “Indian paths.” Fighting during the Southern Campaign of 1780-81 was largely focused on this region.

Cartographer Henry Mouzon was born in South Carolina to French Huguenot parents. Educated in France, he graduated from the Sorbonne as a Civil Engineer and Surveyor. Mouzon’s first cousin was General Francis Marion under whose command he later served in the Continental Army.
