This sterling silver cylinder was made for the 100th anniversary of George Washington’s Inauguration and presented to President Benjamin Harrison at the celebration in New York City in April 1889. The repoussé metalworking technique was used to create a floral design around most of the cylinder and all of the lid. The bottom of the cylinder is marked “Tiffany & Co., Sterling Silver” and is engraved stating, “This cylinder was made and inscribed in less than a week’s time.” The side of the cylinder is engraved Centennial Celebration -1789 – 1889 / Civil & Industrial Parade…representative of the Civil Industrial & Commercial Bodies of N.Y. City / Daniel Butterfield, Chief Marshal – Hugh J. Grant, Mayor.” The scroll inside states: “1789-1889 To Benjamin Harrison President of the United States Ap. 30 1889.
