This Cowboy High Style chair designed and built by Thomas Molesworth for Ranch A features burl wood and red leather. Ranch A was built in a rustic style near Beulah, WY, as a vacation retreat for eastern newspaper publisher Moses Annenberg. This was Molesworth’s first major commission and helped establish him as a master of the “cowboy furniture” style. This commission included 245 pieces of furniture, lighting fixtures, and accessories. Molesworth’s style grew from the Arts and Crafts movement, as well as the vernacular furniture of western ranches. He used natural woods, hides, and antlers, as well as decorative elements pulled from Western motifs and Native American imagery. Many of his pieces also feature his signature large brass tacks. Molesworth and his wife, LaVerne Johnston Molesworth, operated the Shoshone Furniture Company in Cody, WY, from 1931–61, and completed many other commissions for ranches, lodges, and hotels in the western states as the community of eastern tourists and part-time residents continued to grow. This chair is just one example of furniture from Ranch A maintained in the Wyoming State Museum’s collection.
