Toilet cases, shaving boxes, and toilet sets were mass-marketed in the 1890s and 1900s. Valdez, AK, began as a prospector tent settlement in 1898 and was a flourishing town of several thousand by 1905. Although we have yet to identify the specific owner of this toilet box, Valdezans could have received such items relatively easily from Seattle or San Francisco. The doors of this toilet box reveal a contemporary Art Nouveau style, while the winter hunting scene on the top panel would have been of particular interest and familiarity as Valdez receives an average of 300 inches of snow per year. Although mining communities were predominantly male-oriented environments, such objects speak to women’s presence and style preferences in these frontier locations.
